Effective Document Organisation System

FAQ

We receive very few support requests but we recognise that occasionally things go wrong. Of the few requests for support that we do receive, the majority are associated with the installation of eDocStore owing to the large number of variations of web server-PHP-MySQL that can be used.

If you do want some help, check out our FAQ section to see if your question is already resolved. If not, you are welcome to request support using the facility below.

Installing eDocStore is a simple process but to help your understanding of that process and see how eDocStore is installed watch this Flash Movie of an installation.

What are the recommended minimum system requirements for eDocStore?

Check that your system or web host meets the following minimum requirements:

NB. We recommend the use of PHP 4.3.10 as a minimum.

If your web server uses a Windows Operating System, use the built-in IIS web server or you might want to use an Apache 2 web server which is available from Apache. Be sure to select the HTTP server version of Apache and the appropriate type of installation for your system.

Click the PHP, MySQL and Apache logos for more information about those products.

How long does it take for a response from a support request?

We aim to respond as soon as we can but, sometimes it can take longer perhaps a few hours. Support requests made during Saturday or Sunday are likely to take longer to receive a response.

Why can't I upload larger files?

Three things you need to do.

Firstly, make sure that the appropriate variable in config.php has been changed to a size that is greater than the file size you wish to upload. Usually, you would choose a figure beyond your largest expected file size.

Secondly, make sure that the upload_max_file_size setting in the php.ini file is greater than the file size you wish to upload.

Thirdly, be aware that the config.php file size unit of measurement is bytes and the file size unit of measurement is megabytes in php.ini. There are 1,024 bytes in a megabyte and you will need to undertake a claculation so that the config.php setting is the equivalent or less than the php.ini setting.

For example, a config.php setting of 1,000 bytes and a php.ini setting of 1Mb will ensure that any file up to 1,000 bytes in size will be uploaded successfully. A file size greater than 1,000 bytes will not be uploaded. If you set the config.php setting at 1,500 bytes and the php.ini setting at 1Mb, the php.ini setting will override and any file greater than 1,024 bytes will not be uploaded.

Why do I see a blank page after I run install.php?

There could be a couple of reasons why you see a blank page after running install.

To explain, 'install.php' connects to a MySQL database server, creates a new database or locates an existing database (depending upon your choice of installation method), creates and populates tables, creates a database connection file, creates a welcome file and runs eDocStore.

First, check that you have a folder in the eDocStoreSE file structure called 'lib' and a file within that folder called 'db.php'. This file and folder is created to connect eDocStoreSE with the database.

If the 'db.php' file has been created within the 'lib' folder then continue below.

When you run install.php you must be careful that the information you provide is correct. If not, the page will appear to run but you will see a blank page. DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO MANUALLY INSTALL eDocStore at this point. The blank page you experienced can indicate that install.php was unable to connect to the MySQL database server.

The usual mistake is to use the web server name rather than the MySQL database server name, so check that you have that correct. Also, check the username and password information you supplied is for the database server and not the web server. If you are certain the information is correct run install.php again.

If you are absolutely sure you have entered the correct information and you still get a blank page, check the version of MySQL that you are using. See the following note extracted from MySQL.com concerning the new authentication protocol in MySQL version 4.1 and above.

In PHP, the mysql extension does not support the new authentication protocol in MySQL 4.1.1 and higher. This is true regardless of the PHP version being used. If you wish to use the mysql extension with MySQL 4.1 or newer, you will need to follow one of the options discussed at MySQL.com for configuring MySQL to work with old clients. The mysqli extension (stands for "MySQL, Improved"; new in PHP 5) is compatible with the improved password hashing employed in MySQL 4.1 and higher, and no special configuration of MySQL need be done in order to use this newer MySQL client library for PHP. For more information about the mysqli extension, see http://php.net/mysqli.

If install.php can connect to the MySQL database server but the installation still fails, you will receive error messages. In that event, click Help Desk and tell us the error message(s) you received together with the database server name, username, password, MySQL database version number and PHP version number and we will do our best to advise.
